I gave up Diet Coke for a long, long time. Then I started caring for a baby full time. The instant-ness (word?) of the can vs brewing coffee … diet coke is winning out.

Written across the first news story I ever filed, in a news writing class at the University of Florida, when it was returned to me with a failing grade and a request to see the professor after class.

“Looks like you have talent, all evidence to the contrary.”

What he said when I saw him after class.

“THAT would be a great story. Too bad it’s not the story you’ve turned in.”

The words of my first editor, at a magazine in the Hamptons area of Long Island

“You really should get out of this business. You’re not cut out for it.”

The third editor I worked for. She hated me. I hated her. It was symbiotic. Fortunately, I did not take her advice. She was subsequently fired for treating her people like shit and sucking as an editor. I carry her picture in my wallet to this day, to remind me what happens when you treat people like shit and suck at your job.

“Fuck you, Beth.”

The excellent management skills exhibited by my next editor when he disagreed with my assertion that he was being a jerk

For the rest, you’ll have to ask the reporters who worked for me. I’m sure they’ll have PLENTY to say.
